The ESCRS has developed this Patient Portal to inform patients on their conditions relating to upcoming or recent cataract or refractive surgery. The Portal is split into two sections: Cataract and Refractive. Each section gives an easy to understand summary of the different types of condition including the benefits, risks, procedures and after care of common conditions. Each page is easily navigable with clear diagrams and a glossary diagrams help to convey all the information you might need to help prepare for surgery or during your aftercare.

Cataract surgery is the commonest elective operation in medicine. Around 28 million cataract operations are performed annually across the world.

Refractive Surgery

Refractive surgery is functional, not cosmetic, and can reduce dependence on spectacles and contact lenses. However, it does share many similarities with cosmetic surgery; for most patients, refractive surgery is elective and self-funded and is predominantly provided by the private healthcare sector.
