The SRA aims to encourage high-quality review papers that document and codify existing knowledge in cataract, refractive, and corneal medicine and surgery.
Systematic Review Award Programme Lead
Gianni Virgili is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Florence and has previously been appointed as a Clinical Professor at the Centre for Public Health, Queen's University Belfast, and an honorary consultant at the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (2021–2023).
Systematic Review Applications
The SRA is open to all ophthalmologists and researchers (MD, and/or PhD or ophthalmic nurses with research experience) who currently hold a full or part-time clinical/research position at a clinical or academic institution. The aim of the SRA is to provide new scholarly output in the field of cataract, refractive & cornea medicine or surgery, focused on the methodology created by the Cochrane Library.
Up to six (6) awards are available, with a total maximum of €10,000 per award.

The Systematic Review Award (“SRA”) aims to produce a high-quality review papers to prepare, collate, analyse, synthesise and report medical research in the field of cataract and refractive medicine or surgery.

The initiative shall aim to provide a new scholarly output in the field of cataract & refractive medicine or surgery, focused on the methodology created by the Cochrane Library.

At present, funding may be offered by ESCRS for a maximum of €10,000, per award, with the applicant to complete the paper within [1 year].

The review paper must be submitted to the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in the first instance, and if published there, will be made freely accessible to all, at no cost to the author.
- Should the paper be published in another journal, it must be published Open Access. An additional allocation of up to €3000 will be made available to support the costs of Open Access publishing upon demonstration of an invoice from a reputable peer-reviewed journal.

The lead applicant should be an ESCRS member.
Who should apply?

Please note that applications from current ESCRS Research Committee members, as well as the Executive, Trustees, Council Members and co-opted Council Members will not be accepted. This abstention extends to submissions from their respective departments and/or clinics. The Research Committee affiliations can be seen at the bottom of this page. Please check with the Head Office (escrs@escrs.org) if you are unsure of your eligibility.

Only one application per Lead Investigator will be accepted. Should more than one application come in all will be rejected unless the Lead specifies which to keep in peer review.

ESCRS cannot accept applications from the following countries which are subject to financial sanctions:

Review Process
All submissions will undergo a robust, blinded peer review process:

Applications are anonymised and reviewed by subject matter experts who will also be anonymous to the applicant. Please therefore ensure that your application contains no identifiable information. If there is any identifiable information the administration team will redact it before sending to review.

Top-ranked applications are submitted to the ESCRS Research Committee for final approval.
