I am looking forward to great educational sessions, becoming familiar with new innovative technology and techniques, meeting friends, networking with colleagues, seeing new wares displayed in the exhibitor area and getting inspired for newer solutions that can be transferred to obtain better and better results for patients. What do you think will be the hot topics coming out of AAO 2016? Collagen cross linking (CXL): FDA approval of Avedro’s CXL system will finally make this simple and elegant treatment of cross linking available much more easily to the American keratoconic population and nuances of this treatment will be something that many eye doctors will be wanting to learn more and more about. Presbyopic solutions: With FDA approval of the Kamra as well as the Raindrop inlays and with over 1.04 billion people worldwide estimated to suffer from presbyopia, presbyopic solutions are going to be a hot topic. The (PEARL) PrEsbyopic Allogenic Refractive Lenticule developed by me also falls into this category of presbyopic solutions and is being presented as free paper and has also been selected as the “best of” 6 Videos. Image guidance systems and intra-operative aberrometry for cataract: With increasing numbers of premium cataracts, this is also going to be a hot topic for getting better and better refractive results in cataract surgery. Retinal imaging and newer retinal drugs: The OCT angiography that allows a non-invasive three-dimensional delineation of blood flow and capillary dysfunction in superficial and deep capillary as well as choroidal vascular plexuses will receive more and more attention Newer retinal drugs will also top the list. MIGS devices: Following the COMPASS trial results and the FDA approval of the CyPass microstent, there will be further interest generated in MIGS procedures. What will be your don't miss sessions at the meeting? Amongst others, these are some: Spotlight on Cataract: Complicated Phaco Cases-My Top 5 Pearls; Corneal Endothelial Cell Disease: Current Surgical Treatment and the Future of Endothelial Cell Stimulation and Cultured Substitutes; Case-Based Corneal Conundrums and IC on Glued IOL. My Learning lounge session on Management of Late Lens Implant and Capsule Dislocation may also be very interesting for those wanting to start more complex cataract cases. I think my retina colleagues may also like ‘My Coolest Surgical Video’ (Retina Subspecialty Day). How will you relax after a long day at the conference? I look forward to many things in Chicago. Spending some time at the Navy Pier is definitely on my list. I am sure the clear vistas to Lake Michigan, cruises, amusement rides and being able to chill out with friends will help to make it a beautiful meeting. I also plan to walk down the Magnificent Mile and take in some of the architecture, fashion, museums and, of course, the shopping!
