(14) Blue Cornea

Phacoemulsification under topical anaesthesia was planned for a 62 years old female patient with grade III nuclear sclerosis and 6/18 Snellen’s visual acuity. After making corneal side-port, trypan blue was injected to stain the anterior capsule. Staining the anterior capsule in patients under topical anaesthesia improves patient compliance to eye-fixation towards microscope light, in addition to increasing anterior capsule visibility. However, the injection of trypan blue was not properly directed, resulting in staining the cornea in addition to the anterior capsule. Surgery was performed under reduced visibility.
