Spotlight on Innovation: ESCRS Launches Two Research Awards for 2025
The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) is once again championing innovation in ophthalmology with two exciting research funding opportunities: the Pioneer Research Award (PRA) and the newly launched Sustainability Research (SURE) Award. Both awards reflect ESCRS’s commitment to advancing clinical excellence and environmental responsibility in eye care.
Pioneer Research Award: Empowering Bold Clinical Research
The Pioneer Research Award is designed to support independent clinical research in cataract and refractive surgery. With a grant of €50,000 available for one project, the award encourages young ophthalmologists to tackle pressing challenges in the field through novel research initiatives.
Eligible projects may include:
- Clinical trial development
- Non-invasive or observational studies
- Epidemiology or natural history research
Applicants must hold a full-time clinical or research position at a European clinical or academic centre and be ESCRS members for at least three years. The deadline for submissions is 31 October 2025.
This award is ideal for early-career researchers looking to make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes through evidence-based innovation.
Sustainability Research (SURE) Award: Driving Green Innovation in Ophthalmology
In response to growing environmental concerns, ESCRS has introduced the SURE Award to promote sustainable practices in ophthalmic care. This inaugural award offers two grants of up to €10,000 each for projects that aim to reduce the carbon footprint and improve circularity in cataract, refractive, and corneal procedures.
Research areas may include:
- Reducing surgical waste
- Life-cycle analysis of clinical workflows
- Implementing eco-friendly protocols in ophthalmology
Open to ophthalmologists, researchers (MD/PhD), and experienced ophthalmic nurses, the award encourages fresh perspectives – especially from early-career professionals. The application deadline is 01 November 2025.
Successful applicants are expected to submit their findings to a peer-reviewed journal within six months of completing their research, with preference given to open-access publication in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
Why These Awards Matter
Both awards reflect ESCRS’s strategic priorities: fostering clinical excellence and embracing sustainability. They offer researchers a platform to explore transformative ideas, contribute to global best practices, and shape the future of ophthalmology.
Whether you're developing a new clinical protocol or pioneering green innovations in surgical care, these awards provide the funding and recognition to bring your vision to life.
