In Memoriam - Dr. I. Howard Fine
It is with a heavy heart that we extend our deepest condolences for the loss of Dr. I. Howard Fine. His passing on August 29, 2024, marks the end of an era for the world of ophthalmology, and we are all profoundly saddened by his departure.
Dr. Fine was not just an extraordinary physician; he was a pioneer, a mentor, and a true visionary. His groundbreaking contributions, from new phacoemulsification techniques to refractive lens exchange and clear corneal surgery, have transformed the field, and his work continues to improve the lives of countless individuals around the world. His dedication to advancing eye care through research and innovation, particularly in the clinical evaluation of the Crystalens AT-45, has left an indelible mark that will endure for generations.
Beyond his remarkable achievements, Dr. Fine’s engagement with our Society, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), was truly exceptional. His educational contributions to our Society were invaluable, as he generously shared his expertise and passion for teaching. Dr. Fine's lectures and presentations were always eagerly anticipated, and his ability to break down complex surgical techniques and innovations into understandable lessons has educated and inspired generations of ophthalmologists. His commitment to shaping future leaders in ophthalmology through his teaching will forever be remembered and appreciated by the ESCRS community.
But more than his professional brilliance, what truly set Dr. Fine apart was his kindness, compassion, and genuine care for every patient and colleague he encountered. He always took the time to listen, to understand, and to offer his wisdom with a gentle heart. Those of us who had the privilege of learning from him, both professionally and personally, will forever be grateful for the generosity he showed in sharing his knowledge and his time.
His legacy of excellence and empathy will continue to inspire us, but the loss of his presence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Burkhard Dick,
ESCRS Secretary
