Prospective study on rates of PVE over a 15-year period

Dr. Aman Chandra, FRCOphth, PhD, presented the results of a prospective
study on the rates of post-vitrectomy endophthalmitis (PVE) over a 15-year
period during the EURETINA Free Paper Session on vitreoretinal surgery .
“Just under 28,000 vitrectomies were performed during this period, 1997-
2012, within the Australian state of Victoria,” said Dr. Chandra, “and all
cases of endophthalmitis in this state are sent to our tertiary vitreoretinal
referral hospital in Melbourne, giving us a good overview of the true
prevalence of this condition.”
A total of 20 cases of PVE were seen over this 15-year period, of which
11 were post-RRD repair. Eight (40%) cases were culture negative. A wide
range of bacteria is responsible for PVE, though staphylococcal genus is the
most frequently encountered causative bacteria.
