Much More Than a President

Filomena Ribeiro’s leadership of ESCRS made our Society ‘more human.’

Ribeiro.pngFilomena Ribeiro has undoubtedly been much more than a president of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. She has been a reference, a guide, and an inspiration to all of us who have had the privilege of working alongside her.

Her presidency was defined by a clear vision and, above all, a deep conviction in the values that should underpin our Society. Among them, her strong commitment to diversity and inclusion stands out. By declaring 2024 the ‘Year of Diversity’ and promoting concrete initiatives such as mentoring programmes and member surveys, she not only drove structural change but also conveyed a powerful message: European ophthalmology can only truly progress if all voices are given space and recognition.

Under her leadership, ESCRS took important steps to strengthen its international presence. The affiliation with BRASCRS (Brazilian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery) is a clear example of her ability to build bridges and foster a more connected global community. This outward-looking vision has been reflected in multiple initiatives that have enhanced the Society’s relevance beyond Europe.

Education was another cornerstone of her presidency. Filomena played a decisive role in advancing the Simulation Training Lab, establishing it as a central component of the ESCRS Congress and as a key tool for training the next generation of surgeons. Thanks to her leadership, surgical education has gained in quality, structure, and long-term vision.

However, her impact goes beyond major initiatives. She also transformed the Congress experience, making it more engaging, interactive, and human. Initiatives such as the Arena, World Café discussions, and guided exhibition tours have helped position ESCRS not only as a place for learning but also as a space for connection and belonging.

Her sensitivity towards people was also reflected in projects such as BoSS (Building Our Sustainable Society), aimed at building a more inclusive and accessible Society, as well as in initiatives that preserve and celebrate our history, such as the IOL Museum and the Heritage Project. Likewise, her involvement in charitable work, including her visit to Mozambique, highlighted a genuine commitment to improving access to eye care globally.

Those of us who have worked closely with Filomena have also witnessed a leadership style grounded in common sense, scientific rigour, and strong ethical principles. She has shown that it is possible to move forward with ambition without ever losing coherence, integrity, and, ultimately, the humanity that gives meaning to everything we do.

Above all, she has reminded us of something essential: that behind every project and every strategy, there are people. Her ability to combine determination with empathy, vision with closeness, has left a lasting impression on all of us.

For all these reasons, Filomena deserves not only our recognition but something far deeper and more sincere: our affection, our admiration, and a gratitude that will endure well beyond her presidency.

Her presidency leaves ESCRS stronger, more open, and, above all, more human.
