Advanced technology IOLs

The features and performance of currently available presbyopia and toric intraocular lens (IOL) technologies along with considerations for achieving successful surgical outcomes and happy patients were reviewed by leading cataract surgeons in the programme “Keys to Success with Today’s Presbyopia and Toric Lens Technologies” that took place on the first day of the 38th Congress of the ESCRS. Moderating the session, Rudy MMA Nuijts MD, PhD, presented selected results from the fifth annual ESCRS Clinical Survey. The data showed steady growth in use of toric IOLs since 2016, whereas the percentage of patients receiving a presbyopia IOL was more stable. Following a panel discussion of the survey findings, the programme continued with Gerd Auffarth MD, PhD, discussing maximising visual quality at all distances,and Burkhard Dick MD, PhD, who addressed maximising visual performance while minimising dysphotopsia. Next, Béatrice Cochener-LamardMD, PhD, described best practices for preoperative measurements and Filomena Ribeiro MD, PhD, offered pearls on toric IOL calculations and intraoperative alignment. Concluding the programme, Oliver Findl MD provided tips for managing patients who are unhappy after presbyopia IOL implantation.
