‘Auditing surgery should be routine’
“Since the European Registry of Quality Outcomes for Cataract & Refractive Surgery (EUREQUO) was launched, over two million cases have been logged,” Dr Peter Barry told delegates attending the Young Ophthalmologists Programme at the XXXI Congress of the ESCRS.
“This free database provides all surgeons with the means to document cases and compare their results anonymously to those of EUREQUO users in your own country and those of all users internationally.”
Dr Barry, who presented the paper for Dr Sonia Manning MD, dispelled a misconception that auditing one’s own surgical cases is not appropriate for trainees. “Start now If you want to be a surgeon, prepare yourself for a lifetime of surgical audit. It’s already compulsory for re-accreditation of qualified surgeons in many countries,” he emphasised.
