FLACS works well in difficult cases

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery can be useful in patients in eyes with white or brunescent cataracts or zonulopathy, according to the findings of a single-centre retrospective study. It showed that 29 (97%) 34 eyes of 34 patients with either or both conditions who underwent FLACS with the LensX femtosecond laser achieved a postoperative corrected distance visual acuity of 20/40 or better. Of the remaining eyes, three had vision-limiting comorbidities and one eye developed postoperative cystoid macular oedema. Intraoperative complications included small radial tears in the anterior capsule in three eyes and posterior capsule tears in four, one of which required vitrectomy for a retained lens fragment.
