Purpose

To evaluate the efficacy of an intraocular ring implant (fixOflex®) in preventing posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in pediatric patients following cataract surgery.

Setting

The procedure was conducted at a Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinic. The patient received preoperative evaluations, surgical intervention, and follow-up examinations within a controlled clinical environment, ensuring adherence to standardized protocols for pediatric cataract management.

Methods

A 14-year-old female with bilateral nuclear cataracts, secondary to Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, underwent phacoemulsification surgery. The standard intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was performed in the left eye, while in the right eye, a fixOflex® intraocular ring was priorly implanted into the capsule, with the IOL securely fixated within the ring implant. The development of PCO and visual outcomes between the two eyes were evaluated over a 6-month follow-up period.

Results

At the 6-month follow-up, slit-lamp examination revealed significant differences in PCO development. The right eye, treated with the intraocular ring, showed no signs of PCO, whereas the left eye demonstrated notable PCO development. Additionally, the right eye achieved superior uncorrected distance visual acuity and a more accurate spherical equivalent outcome, closely aligning with the biometry target compared to the left eye.

Conclusion

The fixOflex® intraocular ring implant effectively reduced the incidence of PCO in a 14-year-old pediatric patient, contributed to achieving best effective lens position, and improved overall visual outcomes.
