Purpose
To evaluate the cataract formation and progression after glaucoma filtration surgery in patients with advanced primary open-angle glaucoma. (POAG)
Setting
General Hospital of Nikaia-Peiraias “Agios Panteleimon”, Athens, Greece
Methods
In this study we included 28 eyes of 25 advanced POAG patients who underwent filtration surgery. (FS) Follow up period was 24 months.
Results
The incidence and progression of cataract was statistically significant (p<0,05).
Phacoemulsification was perform at 75% of the cases, 9 to 14 months after FS and showed statistically significant association with older age and mitomycin C.
Conclusion
The risk of developing cataract is higher in patients who undergo a glaucoma filtration surgery for advanced primary open-angle glaucoma. The use of mitomycin C during glaucoma filtration surgery is also associated with increased rates of cataract formation.
