Purpose
To report a case of retained contact lens in the upper fornix and yellow tear film staining after cataract surgery.
Setting
Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
Report of case
A woman with a background of primary angle glaucoma and myopia underwent combined cataract surgery and OMNI procedure of her left eye. She reports a change in eye colour from blue to green post-operatively and was found to have yellow staining of her tear film. 8 months post surgery a contact lens in situ was found.
Conclusion / Take home message
This is an unusual case of a retained contact lens discovered after intraocular surgery, which may have caused tear film staining via leaching iodine. A detailed ocular examination including double eversion of the upper eyelid should be performed for any cases of lost contact lenses.
