Purpose

To report the 3-month visual outcomes of patients bilaterally implanted with a new hydrophobic trifocal intraocular lens (
AT ELANA 841P).

Setting

Multicentric, prospective, open-label study.

Methods

Patients received the new IOL following cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery. Study endpoints included monocular and binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuities (VA) for distance (UDVA, CDVA, 4m), intermediate (80 cm, UIVA, DCIVA), and near (UNVA, DCNVA, 40 cm),
mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE)
and defocus curve. Patient-reported satisfaction, spectacle independence and visual disturbances were also measured.

Results

Twenty-nine patients were included in this 3M interim analysis. Mean monocular CDVA (primary endpoint) was
0.00 ± 0.09 logMAR. Mean binocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA were
-0.01
±
0.06,
0.05
±
0.08 and 0.15
±
0.11 LogMAR, respectively. DCIVA and DCNVA were 0.06
±
0.08 and 0.13
±
0.12 LogMAR, respectively.
MRSE was 0.14
±
0.37 D and 46.6% of the eyes were within ±0.25D of prediction error. Binocular photopic defocus curve showed that all VAs from -3.5 to 1.5 D were <0.04 logMAR. Most patients (89.3%) were satisfied with their vision at 3M, and 92.9% reported to see well without glasses or any other corrective devices.  Halos, starbursts and glares were “usually” or “always” reported for 42.8%, 21.4% and 22.7% of the patients, respectively.

Conclusion

All distance, intermediate and near VAs were
<0.2 logMAR at the 3M follow-up visit, and patient satisfaction regarding their vision was high (89.3%). These results showed that AT ELANA 841P can provide excellent vision to patients at all distances.
