Purpose
To evaluate the association between the anterior segment parameters and the rotational stability of the multifocal plate haptic toric IOL in myopic patients
Setting
Prospective study
Methods
Prospective study included 57 eyes of 42 patients with regular corneal astigmatism of >1.0 dioptres and AL ≥ 25 mm who had phacoemulsification with implantation of a multifocal toric intraocular lens (MTIOL) (AT LISA toric 909M). Preoperative examination included axial length (AL), white-to-white (WTW) diameter, anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), anterior chamber volume (ACV), and anterior segment length (ASL; the sum of ACD and LT) measurement. All patients had a minimum follow up of 3 months. Postoperative examination included BCVA, defocus curves, residual astigmatism, and intraocular lens (IOL) rotation. The associations between the anterior segment parameters and the rotational stability of IOL were evaluated.
Results
Postoperatively, uncorrected distance and near visual acuities (logMAR) were 0.09±0.07 (standard deviation) and 0.12 ± 0.08, respectively. The defocus curve analysis provided bimodal profiles showing two peaks of maximum vision at 0.0 D (equivalent to distance vision) and at −3.0 D Defocus (Equivalent to 33 cm viewing distance from the eye). The multifocal plate haptic Toric IOL showed excellent rotational stability; The mean rotation was 3.81± 2.34 degrees 3 months post operatively and 82.73% and 100% of eyes yielded rotation of less than 5 and 10 degrees respectively.
Conclusion
Multifocal plate haptic Toric IOLs rotate more in eyes with larger WTW distances and Deeper ACD. Amount of rotation positively correlated with ACD, ACV and WTW, while no correlation was detected with AL or LT
