Purpose
To compare the postoperative visual acuity curves between image-guided and non-image-guided implantation of an X-WAVE Extended Depth-of-Focus (xEDOF) intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, Greece
Methods
Stage 2 LOCS-III Cataract patients populated two study groups: a) the Image-guided Group (IMG), who received the xEDOF Vivity IOL using the Image-Guided System VERION, and b) the non-image-guided Group (nIMG), who received the xEDOF Vivity IOL without using an Image-Guided System. Postoperative monocular uncorrected vision acuity (UVA) was measured at 25, 28, 33, 40, 50, 66, 100, 200, and 300 cm distances. Spline curve fitting was performed, and areas of the curves (AoC) were calculated. All patients responded to the NEI-VFQ-25 questionnaire.
Results
A total of 40 eyes were included in the study; 20 had undergone image-guided xEDOF IOL implantation, and 20 had undergone non-image-guided implantation with an xEDOF IOL. Analysis of the visual curves showed that the IMG group had better curve flattening and higher AoC compared to the nIMG group. Assessment of patient satisfaction using the NEI-VFQ-25 questionnaire showed a higher satisfaction score in the IMG group compared to the nIMG group.
Conclusion
Both surgical options provide optimal outcomes. However, image-guided xEDOF implantation seems to deliver the best results.
