Purpose
To share our clinical experience and provide the results of the effectiveness and safety of Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) surgery.
Setting
Dr. Levinger’s Enaim Medical Center.
Methods
We reviewed and analysed patients’ files that underwent SMILE surgery at Dr. Levinger’s “Enaim Medical Center” with a follow-up of at least two weeks. Eyes aimed at monovision were not included. Demographics, safety and efficacy of the surgery were evaluated.
Results
89 eyes of 49 patients were included (mean age SD 25.52±7.22, 58.4% women). After a follow-up duration of 14 days, the uncorrected visual acuity was 0.03±0.08 Logmar (~6/6.64), with high safety (0.98) and efficacy (0.96) indices. The percentage of patients who reached 6/6, 6/7, 6/8 and 6/9 was 75.2%, 83.9%, 94.0%, and 97.3% respectively.
Conclusion
This work is the first to describe SMILE surgery outcomes for patients in Israel. Our experience shows that the SMILE laser surgery is safe and effective. The results we present indicate high success and safety rates with low risk.
