Purpose
To evaluate the efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Autologous Serum (AS) in treating persistent epithelial defects following high-energy surgery for hypermature cataracts.
Setting
Ophthalmology Department, tertiary care hospital.
Methods
A presentation of two cases (one male, one female; aged 80 and 86 years) with persistent epithelial defects following hypermature cataract surgery was conducted. Both patients had failed to respond to conventional hydration therapy. PRP was applied as an adjunctive treatment. Visual acuity was measured before and after treatment. Epithelial healing was monitored through slit-lamp examination.
Results
Case 1 (80-year-old male): Treated with PRP. Initial visual acuity after cataract surgery was 1/10. Final visual acuity improved to 7/10 after epithelialization.
Case 2 (86-year-old female): Treated with PRP. Initial visual acuity after cataract surgery was 3/10, improving to 7/10 post-treatment.
Both cases showed complete epithelialization and significant improvement in visual acuity following PRP treatment.
Conclusion
PRP demonstrates promising efficacy in managing persistent epithelial defects following hypermature cataract surgery, particularly in cases refractory to conventional therapy. These autologous treatments promote epithelial healing and visual acuity improvement, potentially due to their rich content of growth factors and bioactive molecules. Further controlled studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to establish standardized protocols and long-term outcomes.
