Purpose
Glistening represents the postoperative complication of uneventful phacoemulsification. It si caused by the accumulation of the fluid inside the microvacuoles within the implanted intraocular lens (IOL). glistening can cause glare, decreased contrast sensitivity and even decreased visual acuity.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of glistening after the implantation of two different acrylic IOLs during the one year of follow-up period.
Setting
University Clinical Centre, Clinic of ophthalmology, Kragujevac, Serbia
Methods
62 patients (62 eyes) were scheduled for cataract surgery. According to the implanted IOL patients were equally divided into two groups (I group - single-piece hydrophilic acrylic IOL - Eyecryl plus 600, II group - single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL AcrySof SA60AT. Using a high resolution images were made at the biomicroscope, Miyata gradation of glistening was used in the study. The presence of glistening was measured 6 and 12 after phacoemulsification.
Results
Statistically significantly lower glistening incidence was noticed in the group with single-piece hydrophilic acrylic IOL 6 months after phacoemulsification (p<0.05). That difference was even more significant one year after the cataract surgery (p<0.001).
Conclusion
Even the presence of glistening was recorded in all groups, Our results strongly suggest that very low glistening incidence associated with Eyecryl plus 600 IOL could be particularly beneficial in patients who are expected to develop increased postoperative inflammation such as those who treat glaucoma, uveitis, diabetes mellitus.
