Purpose

To investigate the difference between age and gender as well as vision change after phacoemulsification surgery.

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology, Nigde Omer Halisdemir University, Turkey.

Methods

One hundred eighty-five patients who were included in the prospective and observational study were divided into two groups as 50-69 years old (Group 1) and ≥70 years old (Group 2). All patients underwent phacoemulsification. The best corrected visual acuity according to LogMAR, slit lamp biomicroscopy and detailed fundus examination were recorded for 12 months after phacoemulsification.

Results

The mean age of the patients, including 185 eyes of 185 patients, was 68.30 ± 0.51 and 94 (50.8%) of the patients were female and 91 (49.2%) were male. In both Group 1 and 2, it was detected that there was a statistically significant increase in best-corrected visual acuity within the 12-month period after phacoemulsification (p < 0.001). No significant difference was detected between gender and groups in the change in best-corrected visual acuity of the patients during the 12-month period after the operation (p > 0.05).

Conclusion

Considering the best-corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure change and complication rates of the patients, it was considered that the reason of why there was not a difference in terms of age and gender could be that all surgeries were conducted by an experienced surgeon. It can be suggested that in phacoemulsification surgery, the experience of the surgeon is important as well as the characteristics of the patients.
