Purpose
The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an enhanced monofocal IOL (EMV, Rayner, UK) in our observation
Setting
Department Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland
Methods
The study included 10 patients (17 eyes) who underwent cataract phacoemulsification with implantation of an IOL with extended focal length (15 eyes non-toric EMV IOL and 2 eyes toric EMV IOL). The mean patient age was 55.91 years, and the percentage of men and women in the study was 40% and 60%, respectively. The follow-up was up to 9 months. The study assessed UDVA, visual UIVA of 40 cm and 70 cm (logMAR), the presence of residual refractive error (MPVA) and the presence of halo and glare effects. The VF-14 questionnaire, consisting of 18 questions regarding 14 aspects of visual functions used in everyday life, was used to assess the patient's postoperative quality of life.
Results
The mean UDVA after the procedure was 0.00 (logMAR). The mean binocular UIVA at a distance of 40 cm was 0.43 (logMAR), at a distance of 70 cm was 0.23 (logMAR). In the group of patients after implantation of non-toric lenses, the halo effect was not reported, the glare effect affected 12.5% of people. None of the patients examined had decentration of the lens. The mean percentage of satisfaction (calculated to the number of responses) resulting from the VF-14 satisfaction survey was 96.68% among non-toric lenses
Conclusion
The use of EMV IOL allows for increased patient satisfaction and good uncorrected visual acuity for both distance and intermediate distance, which allows for many everyday activities without the need for spectacle correction.
