Purpose
To evaluate in real patients the visual performance of new MIOL design using an adaptive optics visual simulator. The MIOL is a trifocal-EDoF design developed to enhance intermediate visual performance.
Setting
Clínica Aiken, Diffractive Optics Group, University of Valencia (Spain)
Methods
The Visual Adaptive Optics Simulator (VAO, Voptica SL, Murcia, Spain) was employed to obtain the visual acuity defocus curve from 25 eyes of healthy volunteers virtually implanted with the Devil's MIOL. Additionally, images of optotypes were obtained with a digital camera to qualitatively illustrate patients' perception at different vergences.
Results
Mean visual acuity values were better than 0.18 logMAR across the entire range of vergences (-0.5 D to +3.5 D), resulting in 0.03 logMAR at 0.00 D vergence, 0.10 logMAR at +1.50 D vergence, and 0.11 logMAR at +3.00 D vergence. The experimental outcomes compared favorably with numerical results obtained previously in a model eye.
Conclusion
The new MIOL design provided very good visual acuity outcomes in actual patients, as assessed with the Visual Adaptive Optics Simulator. Prototypes of this MIOL are currently under development.
