Purpose
To compare the characteristics and intra-operative risk for complications between eyes with unilateral pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF) to their fellow (control) eyes.
Setting
One academic, tertiary medical center.
Methods
A retrospective, cross-sectional study. Preoperative reports and surgical records (cataract surgery) between 2021-2023 were manually reviewed. Patients with unilateral PXF who had data regarding ocular biometrics, preoperative evaluation, surgery report and postoperative follow-up were included. Data collected included: pre-operative characteristics such as previous ocular history, visual acuity, topical treatment, topical treatment, preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil dilation, and nuclear sclerosis degree. Intra-operative characteristics such as operation time, usage of mechanical pupil dilation, intra-operative complications and, intra-ocular lens position at the end of surgery. Finally, post-operation assessment included visual acuity, IOP, corneal edema and usage of medications for IOP control. Statistical analysis between Fellow eyes was performed.
Results
Forty-seven patients and 94 eyes were included in the study. Pre-operative characteristics between the groups were statistically similar (p>0.05). Additionally, no significant differences were observed in intraoperative characteristics, complications, or surgery duration between eyes with PXF and those without PXF. Likewise, there was no statistical difference in pre- and postoperative IOP between the groups (p<0.05).
Conclusion
The study found no significant differences in preoperative characteristics, intraoperative parameters, surgical complications, or intraocular pressure outcomes between eyes with PXF and those without PXF. These findings suggest that patients with PXF undergoing cataract surgery may expect similar operative and postoperative outcomes as those without PXF, indicating that PXF does not negatively impact the overall surgical results in cases of unilateral PXF.
