Purpose

To  determine  the  efficacy  of  an  innovative  low  cost  and  portable  test  for  visual  field  (VF)  examination  for  identifying  visual  field  defects  in  patients  with  glaucoma  in  everyday  clinical  practice

Setting

Cross  sectional  study

Methods

The  TsiogkaSpaeth  grid  test  was  performed  in  each  eye  of  all  participants.  Sensitivity,  specificity,  and  positive  and  negative  predictive  values  of  the  TSiogkaSpaeth  grid  scotoma  area  were  assessed  using  the  24–2  Visual  Field  Humphrey  Field  Analyser  as  the  reference  standard.  The  Humphrey  visual  field  examination  and  the  TsiogkaSpaeth  grid  examination  were  performed  the  same  day  by  two  different  examiners  in  order  to  avoid  biases.  The  two  field  tests  were  evaluated  by  two  experienced  clinicians  in  order  to  confirm  agreement.

Results

Sensitivity  and  specificity  of  the  TsiogkaSpaeth  grid  test  were  81.63%  and  84.91%  respectively.  The  Area  Under  Curve  was  0.83  with  95%  CI  0.76-0.91.  There  was  a  significant  correlation  between  the  TS  grid  test  score  and  the  Visual  Field  Index  of  the  Humphrey  Field  Analyser  24-2  (r  =  0.87,  P  <  .0001)  and  the  Mean  Deviation  of  the  Humphrey  Field  Analyser  24-2  (r  =  0.85,  P  <  .0001).

Conclusion

The  sensitivity  and  specificity  of  the  TS  grid  test  were  high  in  detecting  visual  field  defects  in  glaucoma.  The  TsiogkaSpaeth  grid  test  appears  to  be  a  reliable,  low  cost  and  easily  accessed  screening  test  in  recording  visual  field  defects  in  patients  with  glaucoma  and  it  could  be  used  in  everyday  clinical  practice  and  in  remote  areas  deprived  of  specialized  health  care  services.
