Purpose
To assess binocular spectacle independence for distance and intermediate vision and functionality of intermediate vision performance by reading speed after bilateral cataract surgery with mini-monovision.
Setting
Sussex Eye Hospital, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, Brighton.
Methods
A prospective, non-randomised, single-arm cohort study on visual and optical outcomes after mini-monovision with hydrophobic monofocal intraocular lens (Clareon®, Alcon laboratories, USA). Inclusion criteria were patients with bilateral age-related cataracts with or without regular corneal astigmatism and postoperative visual potential of 0.1 LogMAR or better who were willing to undergo same day bilateral cataract extraction. Exclusion criteria were age under 50 years, any ocular comorbidities that may be detrimental to visual outcomes, and previous ocular refractive surgery. The dominant eye was aimed for distance emmetropia and the other eye for -0.75D. Patients were followed up at 1-month and 3-month. The primary outcome measure was binocular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA) at 66 cm, 3 months after cataract surgery. The secondary outcomes were monocular & binocular uncorrected (UCDVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) at 4 meters and monocular UCIVA at 66 cm at 1 and 3 months. The tertiary outcomes were binocular target-corrected defocus curve (+1 to -2.50D in 0.50D steps) at 3months, binocular target-corrected reading speed with Salzburg reading desk at 66cm at 1 and 3 months and Catquest 9SF questionnaire preoperatively vs. 1 and 3 months.
Results
Twenty-seven patients (54 eyes) underwent immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery. This is an ongoing study, data will be updated, and the final results will be available at the time of the Winter ESCRS meeting. Binocular and Monocular UIVA, Binocular and Monocular BCDVA and UCDVA at 1 and 3 months. Additionally, Binocular target-corrected defocus curve at 3months, Binocular target-corrected reading speed with Salzburg reading desk at 1 and 3 months and Catquest 9SF questionnaire preoperatively vs. 1 and 3 months will be reported.
Conclusion
To be reported at the time of the meeting.
