Purpose
Corneal astigmatism greater than 1.5 diopters is a common refractive error present in approximately 15 to 22% of patients scheduled for cataract surgery. If not corrected, it will cause residual refractive astigmatism and spectacle dependence. Toric intraocular lenses allow the correction of astigmatism during cataract surgery. The purpose of this study is to assess the visual outcome and rotational stability of a single-piece hydrophilic monofocal toric intraocular lens after cataract surgery in patients with preexisting corneal astigmatism.
Setting
In this prospective study, the authors analyzed eyes implanted with RayOne® toric intraocular lens after phacoemulsification surgery at Unidade Local de Saúde de Matosinhos in Matosinhos, Portugal, between September 2022 and March 2024.
Methods
Results
The median postoperatively uncorrected visual acuity improved compared to the median of preoperative best corrected visual acuity (0.00 (0.10) logMAR vs 0.30 (0.3) logMAR, p<0.001). The mean preoperative keratometric cylinder was 2.80±1.22 diopters (range 1.50-8.18) and the mean postoperative refractive cylinder was 0.68±0.50 diopters (range 0.00-2.50 D) (p<0.001). A mean rotation relative to the intended axis of 1.41º±2.22º (range 0-10º) was recorded at 6 months. At the last follow-up, 94.6% of the eyes showed no signs of posterior capsule opacification.
Conclusion
Toric intraocular lens implantation can provide spectacle-independence for distance vision and is becoming increasingly significant in modern cataract surgery. RayOne® toric intraocular lens implantation after cataract surgery was stable and effective in correcting preexisting regular corneal astigmatism.
