Purpose

To evaluate the visual outcomes and spectacle independence in patients implanted with enhanced monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs, Tecnis Eyhance ICB00) in patients who underwent cataract surgery in a public hospital.

Setting

Corneo-plastic Unit, Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, East Grinstead, United Kingdom.

Methods

Patients underwent uneventful cataract surgery with Technis Eyhance ICB00 IOL implantation. Preoperative and postoperative monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UCIVA), distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA), spherical equivalent (SE), spectacle independence, and complications were recorded.

Results

This cross-sectional study included 52 eyes of 52 patients. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean monocular postoperative CDVA, UCIVA, and SE between our cohort and the respective reported means in the literature. Moreover, monocular DCIVA were significantly higher in our group (p = 0.004). However, our group exhibited a significantly lower mean of UCDVA (p<0.001), due to the lack of toric option and the inclusion of eyes with comorbidities. Despite this, a significant number of patients achieved spectacle independence for intermediate distance (75.7%).

Conclusion

In everyday circumstances in the public sector, the Eyhance ICB00 IOL provided similar UCIVA and the same rate of intermediate spectacle independence, compared with the reported effect sizes in the literature, which is higher relative to the standard monofocal IOLs. The reproducibility of such results may provide a more effective alternative option in cataract surgery for both patients and surgeons, with better refractive outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. However, longer follow-up studies with larger group of patients are needed to evaluate these results.
