Purpose
In order to prevent exposure keratopathy, we designed a clinical device which ensures full occlusion of the eye and opening when needed for clinical revision or application of medication.Acknowledgment:PID2020-114311RA-I00.
Setting/Venue
Clinical Hospital "Lozano Blesa" in Zaragoza, in collaboration with the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Zaragoza.
Methods
First of all we stated the requirements of the device to be designed. We analysed all of them from different perspectives and considered several creative techniques to develop some concepts. The evaluation of the different concepts led us to select one of them and develop this idea in detail.
Results
The final product met all the requirements. It allows full occlusion of the eye, opening when required. The cost of the product is low so it can be replaced with no economic effort of the patient. Both the patient and the clinician can open and close the device.
Conclusions
We finally obtained a device to prevent
exposure keratopathy according to the initial objectives. The next step will be manufacturing the product and testing it in patients so that we could validate or redesign it to ensure that it is comfortable for the patient.
