Purpose
To assess the visual performance of a refractive/extended depth of focus (EDOF) toric intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting
The study was carried out at the Ophthalmic Unit of the University Hospital of Verona, Italy.
Methods
Nine patients (18 eyes) underwent bilateral implantation of the Lucidis (Swiss Advanced Vision, Switzerland) IOL, one week apart from the other. In this monocentric prospective study we included patients with bilateral cataracts, preoperative corneal astigmatism more than 1 Diopter (Galilei G4) and no other concomitant ocular diseases. Patients with intraoperative complications were excluded from the analysis. Near-(30cm), intermediate-(80cm and 60cm) and far-distance (4m) best-corrected and uncorrected visual acuities (BCVA and UCVA) were collected at baseline and 3-months postoperatively. Postoperative contrast sensitivity (VectorVision CSV-1000), optical aberrations, halometry (Aston halometer) and complications were also analyzed.
Results
The mean postoperative monocular UCVAs at far-, intermediate- and near-distance were respectively 0.02, 0.02, 0.03 and 0,02logMAR, whereas the mean BCVAs were respectively -0.05, 0.03, 0.02 and 0,02 logMAR. Binocular defocus curves showed a BCVA between 0.07 and 0.03 was maintained from +0.50 to -3.00D of vergence. The mean high order ocular RMS was 0.21 (95%CI 0.17-0.25). Binocular contrast sensitivity was lowest in scotopic conditions at 18 cycles/degree. Halometry scores were homogeneous at 360° (mean 1.02, 95%CI 0.97-1.07). One eye needed IOL repositioning due to postoperative IOL rotation.
Conclusions
Toric Lucidis IOLs demonstrated a good safety profile and excellent visual performances at all distances, with good contrast sensitivity and quality of vision.
