Purpose

Intrascleral IOL fixation using the Yamane technique requires adequate instrumentation, surgical abilities and complete knowledge of the technique. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate eyes who were submitted to secondary IOL implantation using the Yamane technique at a teaching service in Brazil.

Setting

This Retrospective study evaluate eyes that were submitted to secondary implant using yamane technique at a teaching service Brazil.

Methods

Retrospective study of consecutive 38 eyes that underwent secondary IOL implantation with intrascleral haptic fixation using the Yamane technique, during 2018 to 2021.

Results

There was improvement of best corrected visual acuity in 55,26% of patients. However, in 26,31% there was loss of corrected vision. These were mainly due to complications such as corneal edema leading to bullous keratopathy, increased eye pressure and vitreous hemorrhage.

Conclusions

Yamane technique is an adequate alternative for secondary IOL implantation however, it requires great surgical proficiency and proper instrumentation. There is still a learning curve that surgeons have to overcome and the complication rates are still high especially in learning environments.
