Purpose

To evaluate defocus curve of patients having bilateral cataract surgery followed by bilateral implantation of a controlled spheric aberration IOL (RayOne EMV).

Setting

Single site study

Methods

Thirty bilateral patients were divided into two groups with two different post-op refractive targetsGroup 1 (15 patients) had both eyes targeted for Plano/emmetropia. Group 2 (15 patients) were targeted for Plano in the dominant eye and a slightly myopic under correction in the non-dominant eye of -0.50D to -0.75D). The defocus curve of both patient groups was assessed postoperatively.

Results

Follow up 3 months, average values of Bilateral defocus curve( 5 m )

Group 1 Offset Plano

8/10 @ + 1,00   10/10 @ 0,00D;  10/10 @ 0,50D;  10/10 @ 1,00D;   8/10 @ -1,50; 6/10 @ 2,50D

Group 2 Offset -0.50/-0,75D

6/10 @ +1,00D;   10/10 @ 0,00D; 10/10 @ -0,50D; 10/10 @1,00; 10/10 @ -1,50;   8/10 @ 2,50D

Conclusions

The above average defocus curves demonstrated an increase of visual performance for all patients, , confirming a consistent bilateral continuity of focus despite a slight decrease in the distance MTF. All patients confirmed that they did not experience any visual disturbances and/or haloes orglare. Excellent intermediate vision (between J3 and J4) in Group 1 and (between J2 and J3) into Group 2 were reported.

This promising new technology provides for good spectacle independence while providing a good balance in terms of Quantity and Quality of vision
