Purpose
To study the visual benefits obtained with a monofocal lens with improved optics for intermediate vision, in cases of lensectomy for high hyperopia.
Setting
Fernández-Vega Universitary Institute (Oviedo), Spain.
Methods
The Eyhance lens is considered a monofocal lens that improves patients' intermediate vision, thanks to a new aspherical design of its anterior surface that provides a depth of focus of +0.75 diopters (D). The study includes a sample of 30 patients (60 eyes) who underwent surgery using Catalys femtosecond laser-assisted phacoemulsification. The inclusion criteria in the study were: age between 45 and 65 years and axial length less than 22.5 mm. Distance visual acuity, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity, and vision quality were analyzed using questionnaires. The mean age of the patients was 69.3±9.4 years and the mean lens power was 28.58±2.53 D. The minimum follow-up was 6 months.
Results
In the 6-month postoperative period, the mean corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was 0.92±0.15 (Snellen scale). There were no cases with loss of DCVA lines compared to the preoperative one. Mean binocular DCVA at 66-, 50-, and 40-cm (defocus curve) was always greater than 0.6, 0.5, and 0.4, respectively. The contrast sensitivity (Optec-6500) was within normal limits. In the vision quality questionnaire (Catquest-9SF), 100% of the patients were quite satisfied or very satisfied with their vision. The best results were obtained in cases in which the power of the implanted lens was between +28.0 and +32.0 D and in those in which the pupillary diameter was less than 3.0 mm under photopic conditions.
Conclusions
The Eyhance monofocal lens, implanted in patients with high hyperopia (axial length less than 22.5 mm), provides functional near visual acuity thanks to its optimized aspheric anterior surface (refractive-type optical design that achieves greater depth of focus).
