Purpose

The study reports the outcome of non-penetrating glaucoma (Viscocanalostomy) with or without phacoemulsification in juvenile glaucoma over a follow up period up to 10 year

Setting

This study was a retrospective noncomparative case series

Methods

The study included 39 eyes of 21 juvenile glaucoma patients who underwent Viscocanalostomy with or without phacoemulsification between 2011 and 2020.

The primary outcome was success defined as complete if the intraocular pressure ( IOP) was less than 21 mmHg without medications or qualified success if antiglaucoma medications were needed. Secondary outcome measures were mean and percentage IOP reduction, complications and the risk factors for the failure

Results

The mean age at the study was ranged from 6-49 years, with a mean  30.4 ±13.0 years, the males represented 47.6% and females were 52.4%. The follow up was ranged 8-114 months with a mean value 50.9± 29.6 months. The mean IOP reduced significantly from 22.86±8.22 mmHg to 12.2±2.59 mmHg at the end of follow up (p <0.01). The percent of improvement in IOP at the end of follow up was 46.57%. The number of antiglaucoma medications per patient reduced significantly from a mean of 2.62±1.11 to 0.14 ±0.48 per patients (p <0.01).

Conclusions

viscocanalostomy with or without phacoemulsification proved to have excellent results in the juvenile age group. It avoided the complications encountered with the penetrating glaucoma surgeris over an extended follow up period
