Purpose

To evaluate the efficacy and complications  of Ex-Press Mini Shunt Implant for the surgical treatment of open angle glaucoma.

Setting

Magrabi Eye and Ear Hospitals and Centers.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Methods

Retrospective,chart review of 23 patient (32eyes)underwent Ex-Press Mini Shunt glaucoma procedure for treatment of open angle glaucoma,between January 2014–January 2015.All precedures were performed by the same  surgeon.The study included patients with glaucoma underwent Ex-Press mini shunt surgery alone or combined with cataract extraction by phacoemulsification. Intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma medications and complication were recoreded preoperatively,and postoperatively at1day,1 week,1 month,3 months and 6 months.Complete success was defined as:IOP <18 without any glaucoma medication and qualified success was defined as: IOP <18 with glaucoma medication.Ocular massage and suturlysis were considered as; normal follow up management .

Results

Total success was noted in 26 eyes (81%) ,with complete success in 23eyes (88%) and qualified success in 3eyes (12%) at 6 months after the surgery . 

The noticed complications were shallow AC in 2 eyes (6%) with hypotony.

Conclusions

Ex-Press Mini Shunt Implant is an effective surgical treatment for primary open angle glaucoma patient with minimal postoperative complications.
