Purpose

To determine the effectiveness of home based dichoptic gameplay with BYNOCS Dichoptic Amblyopia Training (DAT) program in Refractive amblyopia.

Setting

Krishna Eye Centre, Mumbai, India

Methods

BYNOCS is an indigenously developed dichoptic based vision therapy software for the management of amblyopia. This software uses the principle of manipulating binocular colour contrasts to facilitate binocular summation. Medical records of children diagnosed with refractive (anisometropic) amblyopia in the age range of 4-13 years, who underwent amblyopia management with BYNOCS were included in this retrospective analysis. All the subjects who had completed 30 sessions of Bynocs DAT program. Subjects with strabismus and other ocular co morbidities were excluded.

Results

A total of 161 subjects were included in the analysis whose median (Q1-Q3) age was 8(6-10) years, out of which 85 were males and 76 females. Visual acuity and stereopsis showed statistically significant improvement post game play with BYNOCS DAM (Wilcoxon Signed-rank test, p<0.001). The Median (IQR) visual acuity improved by 3 lines with a pre therapy log MAR acuity of 0.50(0.40-0.72) to 0.20 (0.0 to 0.32) log MAR units post therapy. In the overall sample, 142 (88%) subjects showed improvements in stereopsis post Bynocs DAT.

Conclusions

Bynocs Dichoptic Training is an effective method for the management of refractive amblyopia in children. This modality is an efficient method for improving both visual acuity and stereopsis.
