Serious Neurosurgery Cases Presented With Trivial Ocular Symptoms To A Tertiary Eye Care Center

Purpose

To direct thE attention to serious cases presenting with trivial ocular symptoms and signs while they could be cought via carful history taking and high sense of suspicion 

Setting

Retrospective 

Methods

 Retrospective non controlled descriptive study

Results

36 cases retrospectively studied ,presented to a tertiary care eye center emergency room.

equal sex and laterality involvement.

the most common presenting symptoms were headache,double vision and painless decrease of vision over weeks to months with no alert neurological symptoms.

the most common presenting signs were decrease of vision,Diplopoda and strabismus.

the clinical first impression was consistent with the final neurological imaging via MRI in most of the cases.

MRI was the magic tool to reach the seriousness of the pathology.

all of the cases diagnosed with space occupy lesions were referred to a neurosurgery tertiary facility.

Conclusions

High alert f trivial ocular symptoms and signs in combination with high clinical suspicion of neurologically serious condition can lead to early diagnosis and hence proper on time referral to more specialised center ,saving both ision and life.
