Purpose

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of upper eyelid blepharoplasty on the corneal curvature, asphericity and on the epithelial thickness profile by spectral-domain AS-OCT (anterior segment optical coherence tomography) and corneal tomography in patients diagnosed with dermatochalasis.

Setting

Hospital Garcia de Orta

Methods

Patients diagnosed with dermatochalasis were submitted to upper eyelid blepharoplasty. Patients were evaluated using AS-OCT (Zeiss Cirrus 5000 HD-OCT) and Pentacam (Oculus, Wetzlar Germany) prior and 8 weeks after the surgery. Epithelial thickness, corneal curvature and asphericity parameters were compared. A p-value lower than 0.05 was considered for statistical significance.

Results

20 patients completed the protocol. No eyes had lagophthalmos after surgery. We found no statistically significant differences on the corneal epithelial thickness profile, corneal curvature and asphericity parameters.

Conclusions

Even though several studies have reported changes  on the corneal curvature after upper eyelid blepharoplasty, in this study no statistically significant differences were found 8 weeks after the surgery.
