Purpose

Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) is one of the unintended side effects of intraocular surgeries and traumas. The aim of this study is to evaluate plasma technology as a noninvasive procedure,in order to ablate painful and annoying corneal bullae.

Setting

This research set as a case series in Vision health research center, Tehran, Iran.

Methods

Three eyes of three patients with pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) included in this study. Plasma spots applied on bullae to empty and clear them, using white hand piece of the Plexr device (GMV, Italy, Iran). Tearing sensation, burning sensation and Pain score (scale of 0 to 10) was evaluated before and after treatment.

Results

The results showed that treatment was effective in all of the patients. Intraoperative and postoperative complications was not observed. After 6-month follow up there was no recurrence. All of the annoying bullae ablated. After treatment there was no tearing and burning sensation. All of the patients gave score ten for pain before treatment and zero after treatment.

Conclusions

Based on the results, it seems that the PANIS method can be used as a safe method for eliminating bullae in pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) which are the cause of tearing, burning sensation and also irritation. This method is effective, quick, office base and inexpensive.
