Purpose

To evaluate defocus curve in eyes implanted with trifocal and Extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs.

Setting

Private Eye Hospital, India

Methods

A prospective study where subjects implanted with Trifocal IOLs (Acrysof IQPanOptix, Alcon; Acrysof IQ VIVITY, Alcon), aged between 40 -75 years, BCVA 0.2 logMAR or better was included. Subjects with ocular pathologies, any Intra-operative complications were excluded. At 1 month follow up, Monocular distance corrected defocus curve obtained in each subject using logMAR chart. The visual acuity with each defocus lens ranging from+2.00 to -3.0D (0.5D steps) was measured in randomized order. The defocus curve was compared using two sample t test.

Results

87 and 18 eyes were implanted with PanOptix, and VIVITY respectively. The Mean±SD age of the subjects implanted with PanOptix and VIVITY IOL were 58.22±7.9 and 55.4±11.97 years respectively (P=0.46). Visual acuity with VIVITY IOL was better at all defocus levels except at -0.5 and -1.0D. However the difference was not significant across all defocus range.

Conclusions

Defocus curves were found to be statistically similar with EDOF IOL having little edge over Trifocal.
