Purpose

To evaluate Reading performance in eyes implanted with trifocal IOLs

Setting

Private Eye Hospital, India

Methods

A prospective study design where subjects implanted with Trifocal IOLs (Acrysof IQ PanOptix, Alcon;Trinova,VSY, Biotechnology) and Monofocal IOL (control group) subjects and distance best corrected visual acuity > 0.2 logMAR were included. Subjects with, retinal disease, intra-operative complications were excluded. MNREAD reading chart was used to measure monocular reading performance. Reading performance was measured in monofocal (best near corrected) and Trifocal (Uncorrected) IOLs. Reading acuity (RA), Maximum reading speed (Max RS), Critical Print size (CPS) and Reading accessibility Index (RAI) was measured and compared using one way ANOVA test.

Results

54 age matched subjects (18 in each group) (F=1.01, p=0.37) were included. The mean±SD RA in PanOptix, Trinova and Monofocal IOL was 0.14±0.10, 0.12±0.06 and 0.24±0.07 logMAR respectively. The mean±SD Max RS in PanOptix, Trinova and Monofocal IOL was 87.66± 5.85, 99.47±9.16 and 61.61±3.32 words per minute respectively. The mean±SD CPS in PanOptix, Trinova and Monofocal IOL was 0.40±0.16, 0.31±0.10 and 0.54±0.16 logMAR respectively. RA (F=5.67, p=0.009), Max RS (F= 88.09,p<0.001),CPS (F= 6.35, p<0.005)and RAI (F=61.37, p<0.001) was found to better in eyes implanted with trifocal IOLs as compared to monofocal IOL with best near correction. Post Hoc Tukey test revealed no significant difference in performance of trifocal IOLs.

Conclusions

Reading performance at smallest prints as well as across range of fonts was found to be better in eyes implanted with trifocal IOL as compared to monofocal IOLs.
