Purpose

To assess the refractive and visual outcomes following implantation of the RayOne EMV intraocular lens in cataract patients. With the growth of people’s demand for high living standards, the interest in achieving long-term visual comfort and spectacle independence has increased.

Setting

Tyger Valley Eye & Laser Centre, Bellville, Cape Town, South Africa

Methods

A prospective study of 40 cataract patients (80 eyes) who underwent bilateral implantation of the modified, non-diffractive, hydrophilic EDOF lens during cataract surgery performed with a femtosecond cataract laser. All patients were targeted for mini-monovision, using a target of -0.75 D in the non-dominant eye. Patient satisfaction, visual functions, and spectacle use was evaluated out to 6 months postoperative.

Results

No complications occurred during the follow-up period. Ninety-five percent of the eyes were within 0.5 D of the target refraction. All eyes were within 1 D of the target. Ninety-nine percent of patients achieved an UDVA of 20/20, with 85% of the eyes achieving a UNVA of at least 20/25. All patients were highly satisfied and reported that their daily visual tasks could be performed without, or only with minor difficulties with no depth perception or contrast sensitivity issues reported.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that the RayOne EMV IOL is a safe and efficient option for restoration of functional vision following cataract surgery. The refractive outcomes are accurate and predictable, vision correction is efficient in a wide defocus range. Mini monovision achieved good far and near vision for daily tasks.  All our patients were highly satisfied with the clinical outcomes and would recommend the surgery to somebody else.
