Purpose
Setting
Methods
Six patients were presented with dislocation of PC-IOLs secondary to non-traumatic rupture of the posterior capsule, and one case following minor trauma, 15-20 years after implantation. The posterior capsules were documented as intact throughout follow up. All the capsules were clear with no evidence of cell proliferation, capsular fibrosis, or adhesions.
Results
All 7 cases were successfully treated by repositioning of the original lens by scleral fixations, iris fixation or sulcus positioning. The lenses were stable and central and effective vision was restored.
Conclusions
: "Dead Bag Syndrome" was recently described, characterized by clear and fragile posterior lens capsule many after lens removal. Epithelial cells are absent or scarce leading to spontaneous rupture of the capsule and IOL dislocation. With increasing life span, early surgery and longer pseudophakic time the rate of this complication is expected to increase.
