Purpose

Estimate the normal epithelium corneal thickness (ECT) values in a healthy Hispanic population with the coherent optical tomograph of spectral domain

Setting/Venue

Humidity and temperature conditions from Imaging room were controlled in order to avoid variability of images. These were taken at the same time

Methods

Prospective study were included >18 yo,both sex,no ophthalmologic disease, myopic or hypermetropic < 5D,astigmatic <2D,OSDI <12,BAD-D < 1.6 and NICE < 8.Exclusion criteria were corneal surgery, use of contact lenses and non-signers informed consent. All patients were imaged, using the Cirrus HD-OCT 5000. Sample calculation was performed based on criterion of a proportion and confidence interval, assuming presence of normal epithelial thicknesses of 50%,precision estimation of 1% and a confidence level of 95% expecting a power of the study of 80%.Statistically significant difference p<0.05 CI95%

Results

195 eyes were included. 63% female.Mean age 43 years.68.7% NICE index of 4.Mean global BAD-D 0,94.Global median ECT according to optical zones were: 48+5 um (0-2), 46+5 um (2-5), 45+4 um (5-7) and 44+4 um (7-9). There was a statistical significant difference between four global optical zones thicknesses (p<0.001). Comparing our results with data published by Sadda et al, there was only a statistical significant difference in 7-9 mm optical zone epithelial thickness global evaluation (p=0.001).Statistically significant difference between gender in 0-2mm,2-5mm,5-7mm OZ being thicker in males

Conclusions

We have reported ECT in healthy Hispanic subjects. We didn´t find a difference with the previous publications in other populations being able to access treatment tested in those populations and adapt them to ours
