Purpose

PURPOSE : 1. TO COMPARE THE SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF THE TECHNIQUES

2. TO STUDY THE CHANGE IN ASTIGMATISM BEFORE AND AFTER THE SURGERY

Setting/Venue

TERTIARY LEVEL INSTITUTE

Methods

The study was carried out on 42 patients with primary Pterygium. The subjects were randomised to undergo Pterygium surgery using either suture less/glue less (21 eyes) or suture (8-0 silk) technique to attach the conjunctival auto graft. . Patients were followed up after 48 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks a 6 weeks and 3month post operatively.

Results

Mean astigmatism pre-operatively was 4.26±3.18D in eyes treated with suture less/glue less technique which subsequently decreased to 1.03±0.66 D. Mean astigmatism pre-operatively was 4.98±3.48 in eyes treated with sutured technique which subsequently decreased to 1.26±0.84 D. The change in the astigmatism was statistically significant (paired t-test, p<0.05). Mean surgical time was 15.40±1.47 minutes in suture less/glue less technique and 27.83±1.82 minutes in suture technique to attach the conjunctival auto graft.

Conclusions

Conjunctival auto graft with suture less/glue less technique is as safe as conjunctival auto graft with suture technique.  Suture less/glue less technique reduces the surgery time with successful adherence of the auto graft and improves post operative comfort.
