Purpose

To establish the influence of the number of drugs, associated diseases, side effects and drug prices on the compliance of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma

Setting/Venue

This study was conducted in Clinic of ophthalmology, Clinical centre, Kragujevac, Serbia form 1st january 2021 till 1st January 2022.

Methods

We included 350 patients with POAG in prospective clinical study from January 2020. till January 2O21. They check up the questionary with the different questions about their disese- POAG.  A multinomial logistic regression model was fit to assess the relationship between level of compliance, and  number of drugs, associated diseases, side effects and drug prices.

Results

Patients, who used two or more drugs in the treatment of glaucoma, had a statistically significantly lower compliance rate. Patients with malignancy had a lower compliance compared to those suffering from other systemic diseases, p<0.05. The presence of side effects of antiglaucoma drugs, as well as the need for financial participation of patients in the purchase of prescribed antiglaucoma therapy was associated with statistically significantly lower compliance level.

Conclusions

The level of compliance could be improved by better patient and ophthalmologist conversations, better follow-up planning, lower prescription drug prices, and good organization of glaucoma patient support, and  with the support of patient's immediate environment.
