Purpose

To evaluate the visual outcome after bilateral implantation of the Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) WELL Fusion® Optical System: Mini WELL® intraocular lens (IOL) on the dominant eye and Mini WELL PROXA® IOL on the non-dominant eye (SIFI, Catania, Italy).

Setting

Eye and Vision Institute, The Medical City, Ortigas Avenue, Metro Manila, Philippines

Methods

Nineteen patients (38 eyes) who underwent phacoemulsification for cataract were implanted with Mini WELL® on the dominant eye and Mini WELL PROXA® on the non-dominant eye. At 7-14 days (V1), 30-45 days (V2), and 90-105 days (V3) post-surgery, monocular/binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity (VA) was tested for distance at 4m (UDVA/CDVA), intermediate at 63cm (UIVA/DCIVA), near at 40cm (UNVA/DCNVA 40cm), and near at 33cm (UNVA/DCNVA 33cm). Additionally, the defocus curve, contrast sensitivity (CS), photic phenomena, light and spectacle dependence, and quality of vision (QOV) were evaluated.

Results

Mean spherical refraction (±SD) was -0.18 (±0.35) diopters at V3. Mean binocular UDVA, UIVA, UNVA 40cm, UNVA 33cm at V3 were -0.16 (±0.09), 0.11 (±0.08),  -0.07 (±0.04), and -0.11 (±0.09)  logMAR respectively; while mean binocular CDVA, DCIVA, DCNVA 40cm, DCNVA 33cm at V3 were -0.20 (±0.08), 0.08 (±0.07), -0.06 (±0.05) and -0.10(±0.08) logMAR respectively.

Binocular defocus curve showed a mean CDVA of at least 0.10 logMAR from +1.5D to −4.0 D. Mean binocular halo and glare size and intensity were low at 24/100 and 27/100, and 18/100 at 18/100, respectively. One meter and 40cm mean binocular CS was 1.65 (±0.00) logCS and 1.75(±0.07) logCS, respectively. Mean total QOV score was 82.4/100. Over-all light and spectacle independence was high.

Conclusions

Bilateral implantation with the EDOF WELL Fusion® Optical System provides a wider range of clear vision for distance, intermediate, and near up to 33cm while maintaining excellent outcomes for contrast sensitivity, light and spectacle independence, and quality of vision.
