Purpose
To compare changes in the dynamic vault (difference in the central vault height from scotopic to photopic light condition) after implantation of ICL/TICL (STAAR surgicals, Monrovia, California) and Eyecryl phakic or Eyecryl phakic toric IOL (EPTIOL) (Biotech healthcare, India).
Setting
Nethradhama superspeciality eye hospital, Bengaluru, India.
Methods
Patients with myopia or myopic astigmatism eligible for phakic intraocular lens implantation with either ICL/TICL or EYECRYL Phakic IOL/EPTIOL were included. At 2 week post operative visit, dynamic vault changes in varying light conditions (scotopic, mesopic and photopic) were assessed using OCT based tomographer (MS 39, Costruzione Strumenti Oftalmici ,CSO, ITALY) and were compared between the two groups.
Results
A total of 60 eyes from 60 patients (n= 30 eyes in each group) with mean age(years)of 29.33±1.57 were included. The mean scotopic, mesopic and photopic vault in the ICL group was 558.66 ± 188.84 µ ,530.88 ± 179.05 µ, 425.88 ± 180.43 µ and in the Eyecryl group was 523.5 ± 101.29 µ , 500.33 ± 103.24 µ , 432 ± 95.02 µ, respectively. The mean dynamic vault was 150.25 ± 29.90 µ in the ICL group and 86.5 ± 19.15 µ in the Eyecryl group, the difference being statistically significant (p value = 0.01).
Conclusions
The significant variation of dynamic vault changes in the two groups may be attributed to the difference in the material of the two phakic IOL models. This may be clinically significant in eyes with low post operative vaults with regard to their follow-ups, in order to assess the risk of cataract formation in the long term.
