Simultaneous Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery

Purpose

to evaluate the visual outcome and safety of doing the cataract surgery of both eyes in the same sitting.

Setting

It is an retrospective study comprising of 29 patients who underwent cataract surgery of both eyes in the same setting at velemegna eye hospital, Bidar during a period from 2019 to 2021

Methods

Surgeries included either bilateral small incision cataract surgery or bilateral phacoemulsification with IOL implantation. Outcome was measured with respect to post- operative vision on day 1 and the complications of cataract, intra-operative and post -operative were noted.

Results

Study was conducted on 29 patients . The average age was 55 years . There were 8 males and 21 females. Patients underwent immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery and various pre-operative risk factors , intraoperative and postoperative complications were noted . Only one posterior capsular rent was noted , 26 patients had visual acuity of > 6/12 on the post operative day 1 and rest others vision improved over time.No major complications were noted both inter-operatively and post-operatively.

Conclusions

The bilateral cataract surgery gave good visual outcomes with no serious intra-operative or post-operative complications. The number of hospital visits were reduced, the financial burden to patients , and the crowding of patients at a given point of time in the hospital was also reduced.

This proved to reduce the numer of visits owing to COVID19 pandemic
