Abstract Details

To evaluate patient reported outcomes after refractive lens exchange (RLE) for presbyopia correction, undertaken over a period of 6.5 years.

Optegra Eye Hospitals, UK

A questionnaire comprising of 25 questions was sent to 2.500 patients that underwent RLE between January 1st, 2011 and June 30th, 2017. The questions addressed a range of aspects including: use of spectacles, vision at various distances, visual phenomena, comfort, complications and dry eye. Questionnaires were sent to patients by mail. The research was approved by Aston University Research Ethics Committee.

For 80% of respondents expectations regarding freedom from spectacles were met or exceeded. Expectations regarding vision during daytime and in dim light situations were met or exceeded for 85% and 68% of cases respectively. Expectations regarding glare and halos were met or exceeded by 67% and 73% of respondents respectively. 29% of respondents reported that dry eye sensation was worse than expected after surgery. 82% of respondents reported their quality of life improved following surgery

Overall, for the majority of participants, the result of surgery met or exceeded their expectations. Nearly 50% of respondents said they experienced dry eye. Therefore dry eyes are potentially a key variable to target to further improve patient experience following RLE surgery. Other variables related to vision are also likely to improve when the tear film is optimised.
